Audio Files: B-Sides Edition [Funk, Psych, Rock, etc]
This segment of Audio Files is dedicated to the sentence, "Yeah, but have you heard this version?" As an aging, and possibly over-the-hill bboy, I've had the privilege to dancing to some strange tunes over the past ten years. The strange thing is, when I stopped dancing and started annoying deejays, that's when these little gems got stuck in my head.
Feel free to contribute some of your favorite b-sides and tunes close to your ears.
Not gonna lie. I just heard of The Qualitons today. This edition of Audio Files is also representative of what I do on a daily basis. I 'youtube surf' and hope to find something I haven't heard. After I stopped dancing alone in my bedroom, I did some digging [well, not literally, let's leave that to the real DJs]. Turns out the Qualitons are a semi-new band from Budapest, Hungary. So I guess this would qualify as Hungarian funk? Who knew?
Those closet too me know that out of all these instruments and meaningless critiques I flippantly give, I have NO CLUE as to what makes a good tuba player. Until now. This song has been covered, sampled more times than a politician has lied. Hell, even Jay-Z used it! But this fresh faced band from New York [via Chicago] started recording around 2004. Having the sons of Phil Cohran on the horns doesn't hurt either. Introducing, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.
Damn. Before I forget, let me thank the Youtube user: Tuberider1976. A lot of these little discoveries were uploaded by him.
Now this the jam above. I really don't know if I've heard a song go from a light psych-funk to fullblown deep funk, so fast. I don't know much about the band 1984. So any info on them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks should also be given to Tramp Records, for being so gracious to let their newer releases [reissues] be streamed on Youtube.
I can attest that though these sounds sound glorious, the real thing sounds even better. Support your local vinyl vendor. If you can't find the original pressings, its okay to buy those reissues. They are cheaper and I won't make fun of you for buying them [too much].
Now Midnight Movers Unlimited I definitely remember. Bad memories of me breaking this record over my grandfather's house and hiding it under the suede, brown couch still haunt me. I know he had the original, so 1974 or 75 would be when he originally bought it. Sorry Granddad [R.I.P.], let this be the first step in a long list of things I need to repay you for.
As I continue to sift through the good and great of Tuberider's collection, I stumble upon this. Now, this sounded so familiar. I'm sure this isn't one of the many records I broke in my Granddad's basement, but I know he had this! Nope, still not why this is so fresh in my mind. Then I remembered...Ynot.
Ahhhhh! Anytime I hear this song out in public [which is SUPER rare], I scream to the top of my lungs. So yeah, it's scary sometimes. My pals in Squishy Docious and the Circus Runaways were very fortunate to have this song during their battle.
Lack of Afro is typically a 'groove' band but this one, yeah, I'll do anything you want to this song. [within reason. lol]
Look at me, typing away when I could be dancing to this stuff. This'll be my last one [for now]. A lot of stuff didn't make the cut, because if I put all of TubeRider's stuff on here, it'll wreak havoc on your processor. This one's a bit moody, my type of funk. Forces me to dance different and its challenging trying to catch up to that crazy horn.
This is a lot of things. Reggae. Funk. Psych. Jazz. But it is definitely The Fabulous 3. I've probably revisited this one song so many times that I've tried to 'actively' avoid playing it. But here we are.
There's a lot that didn't make the cut. You may want to check my Twitter for the next couple days, I'll be posting up some select tunes.
Got any B-Sides?
