I'm not usually a huge proponent of getting gushy over trailers -- of any kind. I feel it's a bad habit to fall into when a movie, or in this case -- game, is trying to sell you on its superficial qualities. This being said, there are exceptions to every rule. Dependant on how a film, or game, is presenting itself determines what the audience should take from it.
Above we see a trailer for the soon-to-be-released, Dead Island. Superficially, from what I can gather, it's a video game that has zombies in it. However, based on how cleverly constructed the trailer is, it's a game that isn't trying to sell you on how cool it is to kill stuff. It isn't even trying to sell you on the horror elements, though it is acknowledging that there is horror [clearly] in the game. Much like the BioShock: Infinite trailer, Dead Island is trying to sell you on a feeling.
Very emo, no? Strange to see a company take this angle, but I'm happy they did. It's a trailer for a video game, but within three minutes is pitching you on the idea of caring for characters in this world that could have existed ... in a book, movie or what have you. I'll un-regrettably say I'm exited for this game based on a beautiful trailer that shows nothing concrete about how the game plays. Guess there's a first time for everything.
